COVID-19 hospitalizations in B.C. continue to soar

There are now 425 people in hospital with active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. today, 16 more than yesterday’s record high. Of those, 127 are in intensive care.
B.C. health authorities also reported 1,005 new cases of COVID-19 today. Since the pandemic began, B.C. has recorded 117,080 cases.
Of the new cases, 259 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 536 in the Fraser Health region, 49 in the Island Health region, 110 in the Interior Health region and 51 in the Northern Health region.
There are 10,081 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. A further 15,877 people are under active public health monitoring.
Health authorities reported 518 new confirmed cases that are variants of concern, bringing B.C.’s total to 5,739 cases. Of those, 212 cases are currently active. Of the total cases, 3,858 are the B.1.1.7 (U.K.) variant, 71 are the B.1.351 (South Africa) variant and 1,810 are the P.1 (Brazil) variant.
To date, 1,282,091 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca-SII COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C., 87,970 of which are second doses.
Sadly, there were six new virus-related deaths reported today, bringing that total to 1,530.
Active outbreaks continue at six long-term care, assisted living and independent living facilities and six acute care facilities.
